You will be able to find local libraries in all main cities. Each state has a State Library and the National Library is in Canberra, there you will find the National Library of Australia.
Libraries are public spaces and it is generally easy and free to become a member, you just need to order a library card which will allow you to borrow books, movies and other items.
In most libraries you will find books translated into different languages, but not many offer books in Portuguese. If you want a specific Portuguese book you can always try to order it online through the library.
In most libraries you can surf the internet for free, study, and browse historical files. State libraries tend to offer a good range of services including facilities to listen to music, watch movies and audio-visual files, browse maps, government publications and legal documents. Some also offer an online service allowing you to access e-books and publications from home.
