Many people believe that making friends in a different country is a very difficult task, when it is actually easier than it sounds. Here are some tips that can help you integrate in your new community:
- As anywhere in the world social media and Facebook in particular is a popular option for socializing and making new friends. Creating a blog can also be a good option. There are countless blogs, including Portuguese ones that can be helpful to you. Refer to the list below.
- Join an activities group or sports club. There are many choices in all states. Besides getting to know new people you can improve your health and reduce levels of stress.
- If your firs language isn’t English, joining a language conversation group or enrolling in a language school to learn the local language is a good idea. This will give you a chance to meet other newcomers and feel more integrated in the community
- Find a hobby that interests you. The internet is a great tool for this. Look for groups that engage in activities that interest you. If you still cannot find what you want, consider creating and disseminating your own hobby
- Participating in free activities and events in your state is a good way to keep yourself busy and meet new people, see the links below
- Enjoy the cultural life of your city, be aware of what's happening, go to a concert or show and learn about artists and initiatives in your state through the website arts connect;
- Do volunteer work, helping others can help your own integration in your community. See Volunteering Australia and Go Volunteering;
- Contact your community; get involved in community life
- Get in touch with one of the many groups of expatriates across Australia. Joining is generally free. To receive notification of future meetings, please register on the website of these organizations. The events are informal, and usually happen in bars and other easily accessible places. All participants are usually quite friendly and open to new friendships. Internations and Meetup, are the most popular groups amongst expats in Australia.
